Chapter Ten

Caught, Jane didn’t shift one way or another. Instead, she stood frozen in place in front of the posting house, her shoulders sagging in defeat. Nicholas had to admire her. She’d almost succeeded in outwitting him. She’d perfected the sleight of hand during her many parties. He had no doubt that, as his heart pounded while he’d held her earlier, she’d slipped her slim hands into his pockets and robbed him of his money.

Refusing to retrieve her, he continued to stand and wait for her to cross the street toward him. For five long minutes, she didn’t shift one way or the other. On the sixth minute, or close to it, she thrust her fists toward the ground and stepped in a quick and frustrated motion in his direction.

He expected her, humiliated and annoyed, to brush by him. She didn’t. She halted right before him; her cheeks puffed out in resentful defiance.

They stood on the street, staring at each other. Jane’s blue eyes were bright, and she smashed her lips together to keep from saying something she might regret.

“Why are you so determined to put your life in more danger?” His voice shook with anger, but his tone remained low so as not to draw any further attention to them.

Her chin quivered, and he knew she was trying not to cry. His heart ached for her, and he wondered if now was the time to tell her the truth. “Jane—”

“I know it was foolish and rash, especially considering what Lynch did to that young girl, but I…I…”

“You what?”

She squeezed her eyes closed for a brief moment. “I wished to be away. I needed to put some distance between my…between us.”

“Yes, you’ve made that perfectly clear,” Nicholas said, unable to understand her irrational behavior. They stared at one another, their breaths heightened and in sequence. “Do you wish to eat, then?” he asked after a long silence.

“I’m not hungry.”

Damn her stubbornness.

“So, should I add thief as well as liar to your repertoire?” He regretted the harsh words as soon as they’d left his mouth.

“You dare call me a thief, sir? I merely robbed you of your money. You kidnapped me!”

“And one day you will thank me.”

Her gaze fell to his feet, and he stepped back, allowing her to pass into the inn. He knew she had to be hungry. The moment she smelled the pleasant enough food, she’d devour it without taking a breath in between. For now, he followed her up the staircase, pausing when they reached the broken door of their room.

She twisted to face him and arched a dainty eyebrow. “I never guessed you’d have a temper, Mr. Waverley.”

He smiled down at her. “That’s because not many have pushed me to show it, Jane.”

Her eyes grew rounder from his answer. Good. He wasn’t in the mood to play cat and mouse with her for the rest of the trip.

“Follow me. As you can guess, we’ve moved.”

Her eyebrows furrowed before she shifted her head back to their old room.
